A small South End restaurant, Francesca's Cafe, closed yesterday, BosGuy reports. Serving gelato, sandwiches, coffee, and other light bites, Francesca's had been around for nearly two decades, but a late 2012 sale of the Tremont St. building spawned rumors of an upcoming closure. (Back in April, for example, one Yelper yelped: "Not to worry, word is, Francesca's is closing. It will be replaced by a really warm and cozy bank or another pretentious, loud restaurant like The Gallows (did you know their catsups is homemade and is really special... BLAH, BLAH,BLAH?")) Meanwhile, BosGuy reports hearing that the new landlord wants a high-end restaurant in that space.
