Drink Bier Under the Stars at Bronwyn

Somerville's newest Central and Eastern European restaurant, Bronwyn, opened its biergarten yesterday, a cheery wooden patio in the wide alley Bronwyn shares with The Independent. The full menu is available outside, so the added tables may help ease the restaurant's omnipresent long lines a bit, but there's a very long list of bier to work through when visiting the biergarten. The selection is curated by bar manager Melissa Wiersma, who previously worked at Christopher's and Drink. While the list leans heavily towards German beers (yes, DE means Deutschland, not Delaware), there are also options from Poland, the Czech Republic, and the US, all in a German or Central European style. Pick your poison by category: Lager, Pilsner, Hefeweizen, and Spezial. The wine (wein) list also encompasses the same regions, and it includes plenty of rieslings. The biergarten tables are made from chestnut driftwood that owners Tim and Bronwyn Wiechmann found on beaches in Maine. The space also features a custom pit smoker for the house-made sausages, such as the bierwurst, currywurst, and kielbasa. Bronwyn's biergarten is open 5pm to 10:30pm, every night except Monday.
