Amsterdam Cafe in the South End closed in April (no relation to Amsterdam Cafe in South Boston, which is still open), and a tipster reports that a new business called Cafe Madeleine is in the works for the space. Said tipster sent in a photo of a flyer in the window, which describes the establishment as a French patisserie offering "quality baked goods made from scratch by classically trained chefs at neighborhood prices." Chef/owner Frederic Robert spent eight years as the executive pastry chef of the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas and many years before that in partnership with renowned restaurateur Alain Ducasse, starting with Louis XV in Monte Carlo.
The space, according to the flyer, was designed by local firm EMBARC Architecture + Design, and it will contain an open kitchen. Cafe Madeleine is set to open in "early 2014" and will serve "seasonal, locally sourced, organic sandwiches" in addition to baked goods and coffee.
