UpStairs on the Square, originally UpStairs at the Pudding, will end its storied 31-year run on New Year's Eve. The landlord has decided to sell the Harvard Square building, according to a press release from the restaurant. Owners Mary-Catherine Deibel and Deborah Hughes intend to go out with a bang with a full few months of farewell events leading up to the closure, from a Halloween party to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and more.
Birthed from the owners' love of throwing dinner parties, UpStairs is notable for its fairytale-like interior of pinks, purples, zebras, and the like. It regularly hosts afternoon teas and brunches, not to mention weddings and other celebrations. Last year, Hughes' daughter Charlotte Silver published a memoir about growing up at the restaurant, Charlotte Au Chocolat: Memories of a Restaurant Girlhood.
