Craigie on Main chef-owner Tony Maws is expanding to Somerville, reports the Somerville Patch. Which is a huge deal, since Craigie on Main in Central Square is one of the best known and most critically acclaimed restaurants in the area, partly for its nationally renowned burger, which is perhaps the best in the world. Maws is heading for the space that was formerly the Kirkland Cafe, on Washington Street, and that was long rumored to be slated for a new restaurant called Deco. Maws previously told Eater that he was interested in opening a more casual restaurant, saying "I want it to be fun, I want it to be loud, and I want it to be high energy. In many ways, I want to go back to what Craigie Street Bistro was." Sure enough, the Patch says Maws' yet unnamed second venture will be more casual than Craigie, with a "straight up a la carte" menu and cocktails.
Maws joins a growing number of chefs who are attracted to Somerville, including Ana Sortun and Tim Wiechmann. Thanks to a recent anonymous reader who left a prescient comment, saying "Tony Maws is planning on opening a gastropub across the street from Bergamot."
