As hard as it is to imagine homegrown herbs and climbable cows in Allston, aka "rat city," the upcoming Swissbäkers Bakery and Cafe plans to change all that. Earlier today the Reading-based company cited "Fall 2012" for an opening timeframe of its imminent urban outpost in a Craiglist job post. Earlier reports say the cafe will serve Terroir coffee, light lunches and baked goods including those iconic pretzel rolls and baguettes, which will also be used for sandwiches. Expect a space like no other in Allston, with wooden tables, a fireplace, a "Little Switzerland" playground and the aforementioned herb garden. Sustainability will be a focus of the 2,000 square foot cafe (including the patio), and another 12,000 feet will be dedicated to a production kitchen. After all, those pretzels rolls have to come from somewhere.
