CNN food blog Eatocracy turned to Jim Meehan, the deputy editor of Food & Wine's cocktail book series, for a round-up of the ten best new bars in the country, and Kenmore Square relative newbie The Hawthorne made the list. Meehan is a big fan of Jackson Cannon, owner of The Hawthorne and beverage director at sister (and neighbor) restaurants Eastern Standard and Island Creek Oyster Bar. Eatocracy also featured Cannon back in January when he provided readers with five tips for reading craft cocktail menus.
The Hawthorne opened in November, a multi-room craft cocktail lounge in the Hotel Commonwealth decorated with antiques and assorted classy tchotchkes, like a vintage Russian vodka chiller. The drink menu features a mix of daily specials, seasonal specials, and classics, and interesting small plates are available as well, such as soft pretzels with bourbon mustard and robiola du latte grilled cheese.
The Hawthorne seems to be in good company on Eatocracy's list; other best new bars include an Austin speakeasy called Midnight Cowboy, a Parisian-style cocktail lounge called Pour Vous in Los Angeles, and a Seattle spot called Canon that apparently has an amazing bathroom.
