After a soft opening last month but prior to the grand opening of August 8th listed on its website, Sh?j? declared itself officially open yesterday afternoon, according to a Facebook post. The restaurant, named for a mythological creature searching for an endless sake river, aims to provide a modern twist on Asian food that's less traditional than most of Chinatown's current offerings. The menu, which has a variety of small plates as well as regular entrees, includes items such as crispy clam tacos, suckling pig bao, tempura-fried pickles, and popcorn with kimchi clarified butter. While classic "tiki" cocktails are available (mai tais and such), the drink list focuses on craft cocktails, many of which incorporate house-infused spirits and locally-sourced garnishes. That's all fine and good, but can you show us the way to the endless sake river?
