Do you like barbecue? Cancel your existing lunch plans and make your way to Somerville: The Bearded Pig opens today at 11 AM, adding yet another restaurant to Union Square's exploding food scene. Upon moving to New England a few years ago, The Bearded Pig owner Michael Schmidt, a Florida native, was disappointed with barbecue offerings up here, so he decided to make it himself, resulting in the creation of a catering company prior to the launch of this brick-and-mortar location. The new counter-service restaurant sits next to Dosa Temple on Somerville Ave., offering about 40 seats for dining in.
The menu choices are simple: pulled pork, chicken, and brisket sandwiches and platters with zero, one, or two sides. (For $6, you can grab a pulled pork or chicken sandwich and call it a day.) Half and full racks of ribs are also available. On the side, there are two slaws (one creamy, one vinegar-based), potato salad, mac and cheese, baked beans, corn pudding, collard greens, corn bread, chips, and other seasonal specials, and there are five different sauces offered. For diners who save room for dessert, cookies and banana pudding are available.
The Bearded Pig opens at 11 AM seven days a week, staying open until 9 PM Sunday through Wednesday and 10 PM Thursday through Saturday, so you'll have to get your barbecue on before heading out to the bars.
