Upcoming Somerville barbecue restaurant The Bearded Pig is aiming to open next week in Union Square. On Monday the restaurant took to Facebook to say "We are slated to have final everything next week and be open next week as long was everything goes as planned," and owner Mike Schmidt tells Eater that he's in the "final touches" phase. The restaurant was born from a catering concept by the same name after Schmidt, a Florida native, got "fed up with the barbecue in this area." The counter service-style restaurant will have around 40 seats, has plans for beer and wine and will serve pulled pork, pulled chicken, ribs, brisket, hot and cold sides and banana pudding for dessert. The opening is simultaneously part of three local food booms concurrently happening for Union Square, Somerville in general, and all things Southern and/or barbecue.
