The new spot from the folks at Johnny D's, and located next door to it, is shaping up to be pretty unique. It's called Kindred, and it will be a vegetarian breakfast and lunch establishment with an emphasis on very regionally sourced ingredients. Heading up the food production is JJ Gonson of Cuisine En Locale, an area caterer that offers weekly shares of cooked food using seasonal, local ingredients. The offerings at Kindred will reflect that same philosophy.
In the morning there will be hot and cold cereal bar, where you can choose your grain, such as oatmeal, and then select toppings including maple sugar, fresh fruit and cream or milk. There will be a pickup window so that you can call ahead, place your order, and then just pick it up at the window before heading to work. At lunchtime, the bar will switch to a salad bar, again offering ingredients in season. There will also be a small rotating selection of sandwiches and soups. The space will also be part-bakery, churning out cookies, muffins and breads for Kindred, as well as all of the bakery items for Johnny D's next door. There will be a few seats but it will largely be a takeout operation. Also for sale will be Kindred Cooking Kits, an assortment of all the necessary ingredients for a dish as well as the recipe, sold together. Kindred aims to be open sometime in late 2012.
