After a 20 year run, the J.P. Licks on Newbury Street scooped its last on Sunday. "There was no way we could sell enough ice cream cones to pay that rent,” said the local ice cream chain's owner to Boston.com, which reports that the store lost its lease. In a letter posted on Facebook, the owner says the announcement comes "with great sadness" and notes that this location "was perhaps our most unique and wonderful looking store of any since" with its "shattered tile... and magnificent, life-sized Holstein wall mural." This location was the third to open: nine remain, the store is determined to return to this part of town and plans to open its upcoming Beacon Hill parlor next month.
