Todd English's Olives in Charlestown closed after a fire back in 2010, and it appears as though the restaurant is finally close to reopening its doors. Boston.com reports that English "needs to file the paperwork to receive its permits, such as assembly and occupancy" and plans to do so by Monday at the latest. A January reopening was originally expected, but delays occured when the building, which English does not own, failed fire inspections and new parts had to be installed (the restaurant itself passed inspections). English has a penchant for media-inducing antics such as his recent $25,000 Todd English experience offered on Groupon. He is also frequently accused of expanding his empire past its capacity for quality.
Will the revived Olives capture some of the magic that first put English on the map or simply be another outpost of a distracted brand? We shall see, but after such a long delay in reopening Olives, our hunch is that English is going to keep a low profile and play it safe this time around.
