Michael Mercogliano, the owner of the legendary Mike's Pastry in the North End, has died at the age of 90. His family reported the news on Facebook yesterday, and given the shop's unparalleled status as a cannoli destination among tourists, the post has already inspired nearly 500 comments from all across the country. For instance: "From Columbus, OH -- I visited Mike's frequently while living in the North End a couple of years ago. A favorite of mine... so sorry for your loss." The Globe reports that Mike had been running the shop since 1946 and shares this quote by Mercogliano from a 1998 story: "Low-fat cookies? They taste terrible. They taste like clay... If you want low-fat, don't come in Mike's." Feel free to share any of your own memories of Mike in the comments below or via the tipline.
