The Bearded Pig opened with much fanfare in Union Square at the end of July and unexpectedly closed its doors just three weeks later, citing the fact that a suitable smokehouse could not be found. Barbecue fans were left wondering what exactly happened - regulatory issues? Neighborhood complaints? Yesterday on Chowhound, a poster who appears to be Michael Schmidt, owner of The Bearded Pig, clarified the situation, explaining that he couldn't get enough time and space at Kitchen Inc., the Somerville shared kitchen that Schmidt helped build, and he couldn't find a workable alternative. "We were able to break our lease," he added, "because we had a great landlord that understood our plight and worked with us."
