The Porter Square location of a specialty patisserie is gone for good, the blog Japanese-American in Boston confirmed over the weekend.
Japonaise Bakery, located in the Porter Exchange, had closed in March, when its bread machine broke down. Late in April, the blogger went by the Porter bakery to find its refrigerators and display cases had been removed, and a sign was posted saying it was temporarily closed as it underwent "changes in equipment and management." Last week, she found the Porter Exchange space "completely cleaned out," she reported over the weekend.
According to Japonaise Bakery on Facebook, the Porter location apparently reopened after renovations for some time on June 24. The company's website is currently down.
The Japanese-American in Boston blogger noted when she stopped by the Brookline location of Japonaise Bakery "a few weeks ago," it didn't have bread; she lamented the shop was the only source for fresh Japanese breads in the area.
An employee reached at the Brookline cafe this morning said the shop still doesn't have any savory baked goods, but she said that the baker may return after the summer. In the meantime, the store has sweets, such as cakes, croissants, and scones.
Japonaise Bakery first opened in Newton in 1985, but the original location closed some time ago. There was also previously an Allston location, which shuttered in 2013 when it merged with the Brookline location. Following the demise of the Porter Square shop, Brookline is the only remaining outpost. It is open 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. daily, according to the shop employee.
